What Is a Betting Market? (The Basics Explained)

Illustrated football pitch with callouts for 1X2, Asian handicap, over/under, corners, cards and anytime scorer betting markets Every part of a match has its own betting market, from the final result to corners, cards, and individual players.

A betting market is one specific question about a sporting event that a sportsbook lets you bet on, with odds on every possible answer. "Who wins the match?" is a market with three answers: home, draw, or away. "Will there be more than 2.5 goals?" is another, with two answers: over or under. Each answer is called a selection, and its odds tell you two things at once: what it pays, and how likely the sportsbook thinks it is.

One match holds hundreds of markets because a game can be split into hundreds of questions: the result, the goals, each half, each player, the corners, the cards. On the Lens vs Sporting page, the 1,185 markets were sorted into tabs like Total, Handicap, Goals, Intervals, Result + Total, and Asian markets. Markets are open before kickoff (pre-match) and during play (live), and each comes with settlement rules that say exactly what counts. The rule that matters most: unless a market says otherwise, it settles on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, and extra time and penalties are ignored.

Sports Betting Markets Explained: The Full List

Below is every market type you will meet on a sports betting site in 2026, grouped by what the bet is about. Football gets the most detail, and we finish with outrights and the key markets in other sports.

Match Outcome & Core Markets

These markets are built around the final result. They attract the most money, so their odds are usually the sharpest on any sportsbook.

  • 1X2 (Match Result): Pick a home win (1), a draw (X), or an away win (2). On Lens vs Sporting, the odds were 2.467, 3.845, and 2.858.
  • Double Chance: Cover two of the three results in one bet: 1X (home or draw), 12 (either team wins) or X2 (draw or away). More coverage means lower odds, and 1X on Lens paid 1.48.
  • Draw No Bet: Back a team to win and get your stake back if the match ends level. Many sites list it as handicap (0), which is where we found Lens at 1.845.
  • Both Teams To Score (BTTS): Yes wins if both teams score at least once, and No wins if either team fails to. The final result does not matter.
  • Correct Score: Predict the exact final score. The odds are high because the hit rate is low.
  • Half-Time/Full-Time (HT/FT): Predict the result at half-time and at full-time together, such as Draw/Home. Comeback combinations like Away/Home pay the most.
  • Result & Both Teams To Score: Combine the 1X2 with BTTS, such as a home win with both teams scoring. Lens to win with BTTS Yes paid 3.72.
  • Winning Margin: Pick the winner and the exact margin, such as the home team by exactly one goal.
  • Team to Score First or Last: Choose which team scores the opening or final goal, with a "no goal" option.
  • 1X2 (2UP): A match result bet that pays as a winner the moment your team leads by two goals, even if they later draw or lose. That protection has a price: Lens was 2.351 here, against 2.467 in the normal 1X2.
  • Minute Markets: Bet on when things happen, like a goal before the 30th minute, the time of the first goal, or the result within a 10- or 15-minute window. 888starz grouped 116 of these under Intervals for this match.

Goal Totals & Line Markets

Goal markets ignore who wins and focus on how many goals are scored, and by whom. The line decides how the bet settles: half lines like 2.5 always end in a win or a loss, while whole lines like 2 can end in a refund, called a push.

  • Over/Under Total Goals: Bet on more or fewer goals than a line such as 2.5, so over 2.5 needs at least three goals. Lens vs Sporting had over 2.5 at 1.648 and under at 2.447.
  • Team Total Goals (Home or Away): The same idea for one team only, such as the home side over 1.5 goals. Handy when you trust one attack but not the other.
  • Exact Total Goals and Goal Ranges: Pick the precise number of goals, such as exactly three, or a band like two to three goals.
  • Odd/Even Total Goals: Will the total be odd or even? A 0-0 counts as even.
  • Goal Line (Asian Total Goals): Over/under with quarter lines like 2.25 or 2.75 that split your stake across two lines. On over 2.25, a match with exactly two goals refunds half your stake and loses the other half.
  • Clean Sheet (Home or Away): Yes wins if your chosen team concedes no goals.
  • Win to Nil: Your team must win and keep a clean sheet, so 1-0 or 3-0 wins, but 3-1 does not.
  • To Score in Both Halves: A team, or the match, must produce a goal in the first half and in the second half.

Handicap Markets

Handicap markets give one team a virtual head start before kickoff, which turns a mismatch into a fair bet. The favorite gets a minus line, such as -1.5, and the underdog gets a plus line, such as +1.5. After the final whistle, you add the handicap to the real score and settle the bet on the adjusted result. The actual match result never changes; the handicap only exists for your bet.

There are two families, Asian and European, and the big difference between them is how they treat a draw.

Asian Handicap

Asian handicap removes the draw, so every bet has just two sides. It uses three kinds of lines:

  • Half lines (-0.5, -1.5): No refund is possible. At -1.5, your team must win by two or more goals.
  • Whole lines (-1, -2): If the margin lands exactly on the line, your stake comes back. At -1, a one-goal win is a refund.
  • Quarter lines (-0.25, -0.75): Your stake is split evenly across the two nearest lines, so you can win half or lose half.

Here is how an RM 100 bet on a favorite at -0.75 settles:

Final ResultWhat Happens to Your RM 100
Your team wins by 2 or moreFull win at the quoted odds
Your team wins by exactly 1RM 50 on the -0.5 half wins; RM 50 on the -1 half is refunded
Draw or defeatFull stake lost

Two shortcuts worth remembering: Asian handicap 0 settles exactly like Draw No Bet, and +0.5 settles exactly like Double Chance.

European Handicap

European handicap keeps three outcomes, with the third being a handicap draw. Lines are always whole numbers, shown as -1 or as a starting score like 0:1, and there are no refunds. If Team A is at -1 and wins 2-1, the adjusted score is 1-1, so the handicap draw wins and a bet on Team A -1 loses. Three outcomes mean higher odds on each option, but no safety net on narrow results.

Asian Handicap Compared with European Handicap

The easiest way to see the difference is to put both on the same team at the same line:

Final Margin for Team AAsian Handicap -1European Handicap -1
Wins by 2 or moreWinWin
Wins by exactly 1Stake refundedLoss (the handicap draw wins)
DrawLossLoss
LosesLossLoss

Asian handicap suits you when you want protection on narrow results, and it is the standard on Malaysia-facing sportsbooks, often displayed in Malay odds. European handicap suits you when you have a strong view on the exact margin and want higher odds in return.

Half-Specific Markets

Most core markets also come in a half-time version. These settle on one half alone, so a late goal in the other half does not affect your bet.

  • Half-Time Result (1X2) and Second Half Result: Pick the result of the first half at the break, or of the second half on its own.
  • First Half Goals (Over/Under): Lines sit lower, usually 0.5 or 1.5, since first halves tend to be quieter.
  • Second Half Goals (Over/Under): Only second-half goals count, so a 2-0 half-time score adds nothing.
  • Highest Scoring Half: First half, second half, or equal. Equal wins when both halves produce the same number of goals, including a 0-0.
  • Both Teams To Score in 1st Half: Both sides must score before half-time.
  • Win Either Half or Win Both Halves: Your team must outscore the opponent in at least one half, or in both.

Player-Specific Markets

Player markets, often called player props, focus on one player's performance. Own goals never count for a goalscorer bet, and most sportsbooks void the bet if your player never gets on the pitch. A first goalscorer bet can still lose if the first goal comes before your substitute enters.

  • Anytime Goalscorer: Your player scores at any point in the match. For Wales vs Norway, Stake had Erling Haaland at 1.49.
  • First Goalscorer: Your player must score the match's opening goal, so it pays much more than the anytime bet.
  • Last Goalscorer: Your player must score the final goal of the match.
  • Player to Score 2 or More / Hat-Trick: Your player needs two goals, or three for a hat-trick.
  • Player to Score or Assist: Wins with either a goal or an assist from your player.
  • Player Assists: Settled on the official assist figure from the sportsbook's data source.
  • Player Shots and Shots on Target: Total attempts, or only those on target. Blocked shots do not count as on target.
  • Goalkeeper Saves, Tackles and Passes: Newer stat lines for defenders, midfielders and keepers, now common in big leagues.

Cards, Fouls & Disciplinary Markets

Card markets depend heavily on the referee and the fixture. Most count only cards shown to players during normal time, but some include extra time, like Stake's "Player to be carded (incl. overtime)", so read the market name closely.

  • Total Match Yellow Cards (Over/Under): More or fewer yellow cards than the line across both teams.
  • Booking Points: A points total where a yellow usually counts 10 and a red counts 25.
  • Player to Be Booked: Your player receives at least one card.
  • Red Card in Match: Yes wins if any player is sent off, including through a second yellow.
  • Team Total Cards: Cards for one team only, over or under a line.
  • Total Fouls and Player Fouls: Fouls committed by the match, a team, or one player.

Corner Markets

Corner markets reward bettors who watch how teams attack. A side that crosses a lot, or is chasing the game, wins far more corners. Only corners actually taken count, so a corner awarded but never taken is ignored.

  • Total Match Corners (Over/Under): Total corners by both teams against a line such as 9.5.
  • Team Total Corners: Corners for one team only.
  • Corner Handicap and Most Corners: Give one team a corner head start, or simply pick which team wins more corners.
  • First Corner: Which team takes the first corner of the match.
  • Race to X Corners: Which team reaches a set number of corners first, such as five, with a "neither" option.

Combo & Miscellaneous Markets

These specials focus on how and when a match unfolds rather than on the raw numbers.

  • Goal Method (First Goal): How the opening goal is scored: header, shot, free kick, penalty, or own goal.
  • To Come From Behind and Win: A team concedes the first goal but still wins the match.
  • Match Decided in Extra Time or Penalties: Only for cup ties that need a winner. Under the Laws of the Game, a shootout takes place after the match has ended, which is why shootout kicks never count toward goal markets. Only markets like "To Qualify" or "To Lift the Trophy" include extra time and penalties.
  • Penalty Awarded or Missed: Whether the referee awards a penalty, or whether a penalty is missed.
  • Own Goal in Match: Yes wins if anyone puts the ball into their own net.

Bet Builder, Also Known as Same Game Parlay (SGP)

A bet builder lets you combine several markets from this list into one bet on a single match. Stake calls it Same Game Multi and gives it its own tab on every match page. We built a three-leg slip on Wales vs Norway: Haaland to score (1.49), Jorgen Strand Larsen to score (2.44), and Torbjorn Heggem to be carded (6.20), for combined odds of 22.54.

Stake bet slip showing a three-leg Same Game Multi on Wales vs Norway at combined odds of 22.54 Our three-leg Same Game Multi on Stake: two anytime goalscorers and a player card, combined at 22.54.

Those odds equal the three prices multiplied. That will not always be the case, since sportsbooks usually trim the odds when legs are closely linked, like a team to win plus its striker to score. Every leg must land, so one card that never comes loses the whole slip. We explain how bet builders work, and how to stack them across matches, in our sports betting features guide.

Outright & Long-Term Markets

Outright markets are bets on how a whole competition ends rather than on one match: league winner, top goalscorer, top four finish, relegation, or who reaches the final. Your money is tied up for weeks or months, but odds are often high. When we checked, Stake had Arsenal at 1.50 to win the 2026/27 Premier League and Erling Haaland at 1.39 for top goalscorer, with Coventry out at 2,501.00.

Premier League 2026/27 winner and top goalscorer outright odds on Stake Outright odds for the 2026/27 Premier League on Stake, with Arsenal at 1.50 for the title and Erling Haaland at 1.39 for top goalscorer.

The range goes far beyond football. The long-term section on 888starz listed 262 football outrights, 118 in basketball and 101 horse racing ante-post markets. If two players finish level in a top goalscorer race, dead-heat rules usually split your stake between them, so check the rules before backing a close race.

Most football markets have a twin in other sports, plus a few sport-specific extras:

  • Badminton: Match winner, game handicap (such as -1.5 games), total points, and correct score in games (2-0 or 2-1).
  • Esports: Map winner, map handicap, total maps, and in-game markets like first blood or first tower in Dota 2 and Mobile Legends.
  • Basketball: Point spread, total points, quarter and half lines, and player points, rebounds, and assists.
  • Tennis: Set betting, game handicap, total games, and a tie-break in the match.
  • MMA and boxing: Method of victory (knockout, submission, or decision) and round betting.
  • Cricket: Top batter, total match sixes, and method of dismissal.

Same Betting Market, Different Odds

Some markets settle in exactly the same way under different names, and sportsbooks often offer odds on them differently. A 0-0 correct score and under 0.5 total goals both win only if nobody scores. On the same match, 888starz had under 0.5 at 16.00 while the 0-0 correct score paid 16.50. Same result, same risk, yet RM 100 returns RM 1,650 on one and RM 1,600 on the other.

Total goals market with under 0.5 goals priced at 16 Under 0.5 goals priced at 16.00 in the Total market on 888starz.

Correct score market with 0-0 priced at 16.5 The 0-0 correct score on the same match paid 16.50 for exactly the same outcome.

Other identical pairs worth comparing before you bet:

  • European handicap draw at Home -1 and Winning Margin: Home by exactly 1 goal
  • Draw No Bet and Asian Handicap 0
  • Double Chance 1X and Asian Handicap Home +0.5
  • Win to Nil and Home Win combined with BTTS No
  • Home Clean Sheet and Away Team Total Under 0.5

The odds differ because each market is managed on its own, with its own margin, and busy markets tend to get tighter odds than side markets. Before confirming any of these bets, search the match page for its twin and take the higher number. It takes ten seconds, and it pays extra on every win.

Understanding Sports Betting Markets

However exotic a market looks, it fits into one of three groups:

  • Result markets: Who wins, or whether it ends level. These take the most money, so sportsbooks price them tightly and keep margins thin.
  • Stat and player markets: One slice of the match, such as goals, corners, cards, or a player's shots. They run on live data feeds and usually carry bigger margins, since fewer people bet on them.
  • Conditional markets: Handicaps and lines that shift the starting point, turning a lopsided match into two roughly equal sides.

Every odds include a small cut for the sportsbook, which is usually larger in niche markets and grows each time you combine selections. If you meet an unfamiliar bet name like a Yankee or a Lucky 15, it comes from British bookmaking, and this glossary of UK bet types explains them.

How to Read the Value in Decimal & Malay Odds

Decimal odds show your total return for every RM 1 staked, and they also reveal the chance the sportsbook gives an outcome: divide 1 by the odds. Lens at 2.467 works out to about 40.5%. Do the same for the draw at 3.845 (26%) and Sporting at 2.858 (35%), and the three add up to 101.5%. That extra 1.5% is the sportsbook's margin, known as the overround, and a figure that low means a fairly priced market. Value exists when your honest estimate is higher than the implied chance. Rate Lens at 45% and 2.467 is a value price. Rate them at 35%, and it is not, however much you like the team.

Malay odds run from -1.00 to +1.00, and the sign changes how you read them. A positive number is your profit on the stake: at 0.80, RM 100 wins RM 80, the same as 1.80 in decimal, and it marks the favorite. A negative number shows what you risk for every unit you win: at -0.80, a RM 100 bet risks RM 80 and wins RM 100, the same as 2.25 in decimal, and it marks the underdog. Both sides meet at 1.00, which is even money. For the implied chance, positive odds use 1 divided by (1 plus the odds), so 0.80 is 55.6%. Negative odds use the number divided by (1 plus the number), so -0.80 becomes 0.80 divided by 1.80, or 44.4%.

How to Choose the Right Market for Your Strategy

Picking a market should be a decision, not a scroll. These five habits help.

Match Your Read to the Market

Start with what you think will happen, then find the market that pays for exactly that. If a team's defense keeps leaking goals but its own attack is weak, the opponent's team total or BTTS Yes fits better than backing the opponent to win. If you expect a tight, cagey game, look at under 2.5 goals or the underdog on a +0.5 Asian line.

Line Shopping & Odds Comparison

The same selection rarely has the same odds everywhere. A RM 100 winner at 1.90 pays RM 90 profit, and at 2.00 it pays RM 100. Over 100 winning bets, that gap alone is worth RM 1,000. Keep accounts at two or three sportsbooks, compare before every bet, and check for identical markets on the same site, as covered above.

Risk vs. Reward (Volatility)

Lower-odds markets like double chance or under 3.5 goals win often but pay little, while correct score, first goalscorer, and multi-leg bet builders pay big and lose most of the time. Use steady markets for your main bets, and long shots only as a small extra.

Bankroll Management

Set a betting budget you can afford to lose, then split it into units of around 1% to 2% each. Core markets like 1X2 or Asian handicap can take a full unit, while correct score, long bet builders, and outrights deserve half a unit or less. Never raise your stakes to win back losses, since that is the quickest way to empty a bankroll.

Avoiding Confirmation Bias

Confirmation bias is the habit of noticing only the facts that support what you already believe, and fans are especially prone to it when it comes to their own team. Before betting, look at data that does not care who you support: recent form, injuries, head-to-head records, and expected goals (xG), which measures the quality of the chances a team creates. xG shows whether a winning run is built on solid chances or on luck. If you cannot make a case for the other side of your bet, you have not looked hard enough.

What Betting Markets Should I Pick?

The right market depends on how you like to bet. Patient planners get the most from outright markets: one well-researched bet on a league winner or top scorer can run all season, and some sites even let you bet against a team with a "No" option. Action seekers are better served by live markets like next goal, minute markets, and in-play corners, where the odds move with every attack.

888starz Champions League 2026/27 winner market with Yes and No odds for each club 888starz prices Champions League winner bets as Yes/No pairs, with Barcelona at 6.1 to lift the trophy and 1.084 not to.

Numbers-minded bettors tend to settle on Asian handicap and goal lines, where margins are thin, and the draw disappears. Stats fans who follow referees, set pieces and player form will feel at home in corners, cards and player props.

Casual weekend bettors are well served by 1X2, double chance and a short accumulator of two or three picks. Long-shot lovers can enjoy correct score, first goalscorer and bet builders, as long as stakes stay small. Badminton and esports fans should look past the match winner to game and map handicaps on uneven matchups. Whatever you choose, start with markets you fully understand.

FAQ About Online Betting Markets
